Three Cups of Tea 3

10 05 2011

Sometimes it’s difficult to figure out what the “theme” of a book is.  A theme is the basic message an author wants you to take away from their story.  Greg Mortenson feels that his book’s theme is “Education is Hope.”  Explain in your own words what that message means to you.   Be sure to tell us what the most important lesson you’ve learned from Three Cups of Tea is.  Explain why.

Be sure to type out your answers in complete sentences.  Be sure to back up your ideas with some examples, evidence, or proof.  Be sure to check back and see what other people say too.  Be sure to comment on what they say.

The saying education is hope can mean many things, but to me it means that when you get educated, even if it is just a little bit, they can have hope. With this hope they can know that they will be able to do something and can be successful. This can make a huge impact on their life now and in the future.
Hope can be used in many ways like, I hope I make the basketball team or there is a lot of hope for the kids in the Ronald McDonald fund raiser. Both ways are correct, but the one Greg is using is the second one. As he gives these kids an education they receive hope that they will get smarter and healthier. This allows the kids to not have to worry so much. Hope is such a wonderful thing.
The most important lesson I have learned from Three Cups of Tea is that life isn’t always gonna be easy. There may be a few bumps in the road you are taking. For example Greg was prepared to build the school and wanted to right away, but they first had to build a bridge. This forced him to wait a lot longer then he wanted to. Another example is that he was looking for places to build a new school, but got captured that he almost missed the birth of his first child. Things that I see happen a lot to people is that they are working in groups, but they don’t get the group they wanted or their group won’t do what they want to do. This is how life is. No one is perfect and no one will ever be. There will always be that one blemish in every person you meet. This is what makes us unique. That is what I believe the book, Three Cups of Tea, is all about

That is the same way I thought about the theme of the story.

I think that you are on the right track i think that might be what it means

Skyler W.

This is also what I thought the real “theme” of the book is, but don’t you think that there is only one type of hope because there seems to be only one kind of hope.

The saying “Education is Hope” has a very importanat meaning. This saying in my opinion means nothing (or almost nothing) can be accomplished without education. For example, history is very important. If we didn’t learn about history, we would make the same mistakes that we already have, we wouldn’t laern any lessons. Also, you need education for your whole future. Your education know effects your education for high school, which effects your education for your colledge, which effects your career choice, which effects the rest of your life. I have also learned much more from 3 Cups of Tea. One more lesson I have learned is that helping others gives you more profit than helping yourself. When you help other people, they will want to help you back, and 5 or 10 people who want to help you can give you more than you can give yourself. Epitaph, there are many lessons to be learned from 3 Cups of Tea.

I think the “almost nothing” part could be like, you don’t need education to do crawl when your a kid, you just start randomly doing it. Don’t get me wrong, i know babies need help to walk because they don’t know how to keep balance. I just picked babies as the topic, there are others too. I’m not just picking on babies.

12 05 2011
Carli C.

I dont get it. What do babies have to do with education???

12 05 2011
Lauren W.

Collin, that is why I said “almost nothing” can be accomplished without education. Like, without education you can still get a job at McDonald’s, but, you teacher or a lawyer and other such things. Without education, you wouldn’t be able to accomplish the important things. See what I mean?

12 05 2011
Autumn E.

… Babies? o_o How do they have anything to do with the topic. And in a way you do need education to crawl. They may not know it but they LEARN to crawl. When you LEARN something it’s education…

12 05 2011
Lauren W.

Carli, I don’t know what babies have to do with education either.

12 05 2011
Alejandro. S

COLLIN WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY?

12 05 2011
Ammar I.

There’s stuff you can learn without school. Such as walking, not to get run over when crossing the street, Run, and stuff like that can be learned.

12 05 2011
ALEX R.

When you learn something it doesn’t have to be education or from schools. If you burn yourself it’s a natural lesson that you taught yourself. Just as if a baby moved it’s legs and it moved forward a natural lesson.

12 05 2011
ALEX R.

12 05 2011
Jes B.

actually you kind of need to show the babies how to walk so they do get “baby education” I guess?

12 05 2011
Matt

I think your right. It’s not about education or any of that. You could be a weaver or a cook and still make tons of money. Look at Ghandi. He was poor and uneducated but he changed the world. I think it’s more about influences and how we grow up. I was watching Scared Straight the other day. It’s a show about bad girls checking out state prison. Half the girls in that episode saw their mom in the prison. That just goes to show you that kids almost always look up to their parents and if it’s a bad parent, they will be a bad parent, too.

12 05 2011
Carli C.

You can still do many things without education. and no one really thinks you’re picking on babies. all you did was talk about them.

12 05 2011
Collin V.

I’m just trying to make a point, adding on to Lauren’s answer. I said there are other things that you don’t need education for.^ You know i just try to get my ten points and babies were the easiest to talk about. You guys are making it into a discussion that we don’t need to have. Jeez. Anyways, the question was,”What does education=hope mean to YOU. I just picked babies for something simple. I know, it sounds like babies mean everything to me but it was the easiest thing to talk about, maybe next time I just won’t respond to someone who has a bunch of people responding to me asking questions about something I said that it wasn’t the only thing there was to talk about… If you read carefully that I said and quote,”I just picked babies as the topic, there are others too. I’m not just picking on babies.”

12 05 2011
Martina

Great way to put it Lauren, but i think its still possible to accomplish stuff even if you don’t have any education. But i still agree that you are limited to your choices. 🙂

12 05 2011
Ammar I.

You spelled college wrong.

12 05 2011
Ammar I.

I agree with that. You can’t do any thing without education.

12 05 2011
Collin D.

There are many jobs you can get, such as, a fast food or short order cook, a cashier, a construction worker, cosmetology (hair cutting/styling… etc.), or being a delivery person, all of these jobs do not require any education.

12 05 2011
Carli C.

But will you make a lot of money? Probably not.

31 05 2011
Skyler W.

Lauren, I totally agree that education is only hope, but don’t you think that helping yourself is also a benefit in education along with helping others. I ask this because it only seems that you believe educationis more important to others but yourself.

11 05 2011
Autumn E.

It’s not surprising that Greg Mortenson’s theme is “Education is Hope” . To me this can mean multiple things. The first thing that comes to my mind is, that he believes in order to gain hope, you need to be educated. What kept Greg going was probably his hope. He got this hope from knowing that he will help children learn. It can also mean that there can’t be much hope if you don’t learn. How can someone expect to live a good life if they don’t know something as easy as counting or their own alphabet. By building schools and donating money Mortenson gave those children a bright future . The most important lesson to me is that don’t take something for granted. We may not like school or we want things we don’t need. The kids in Pakistan though suffer because of no good water, or no shelter. These are the things I learned from the book Three Cups of Tea.

11 05 2011
Brianna C.

I agree, we shouldn’t take things for granted. Just like the kids in Pakistan didn’t take the schools for granted.

12 05 2011
Autumn E.

Yeah. I guess this story helped me appreciate things a bit more.

11 05 2011
Maisie M.

That’s what i thought too Autumn. And especially about the part where you said that you have learned from reading this book. I feel like i also have learned a lot, like how much stuff we have! and not just like anything specific, just things in general that we use every day. And that some kids in Pakistan might of never heard of. And like how Greg’s daughter said that compared to them we are spoiled. And i fully agree with that. We don’t even realize how much we have really.

12 05 2011
Autumn E.

Yeah.. The things we have or use daily may be a once in a life time experience to them. I’m sure they’ve never used iPods or laptops.

12 05 2011
brianna c.

I agree Maisie, comparing us to Pakistan kids we are spoiled. We just have so many more things then them, like our technology.

12 05 2011
Autumn E.

@Bri
Yeah like cellphones for example. I’ m sure if thy got one they would not even know what to do with it.

12 05 2011
Collin D.

I didn’t think that way about the theme though I believe you are right. I thought that education gives hope by giving them educated people to fix their problems.

12 05 2011
Autumn E.

Yes. Being educated can give them a shot at something more. Instead of just living a plain old life at home not knowing much, they could hope to become doctors or teachers with their education.

12 05 2011
Martina

Good idea. I totally agree. If Greg never would have went to school..do you think he still would have wanted to make a difference in life?

12 05 2011
Lauren W.

Martina, Maybe he still would want to make a difference because he has a kind heart, or maybe his education would of effected if he still would of wanted to make a difference.

12 05 2011
Autumn E.

Well honestly… he might have. I mean, he wanted to do this in honor of his sister. Even if he didn’t go to school his sister still would have died. What I just said kind of defeats the purpose of what I said before… XD

13 05 2011
Tori H

I agree helping others can make a big difference.

31 05 2011
Skyler W.

Autumn, I agree that it shouldn’t be a real suprise that Greg Mortenson’s theme is “education is hope” for the book, but don’t you think that education can mean other things than just hope. For an example, education can also be a new begining, or even a chance to care.

11 05 2011
Nikolas S

I think “Education is Hope” means that if you get an education you will most likely succeed in life. So if you don’t get an education you will not get that far in life. You can’t have hope if you don’t know much about the world. And hope gets you pretty far in life. Without school people in places like Pakistan will most likely not know how to read or write; if you don’t know how to read or write you won’t get far in life.

11 05 2011
Bryce Kurtzzzzzzzz

well, you dont have to have a lot of education to go somewhere in life. some didn’t have much education at all.

12 05 2011
Nikolas S

But do the people who don’t have much education get very good jobs?

12 05 2011
Martina

I do agree that you need education to accomplish and succeed in life. but if unfortunately you don’t, then i don’t think you’re not able to accomplish stuff. I mean the only disadvantage is that you are limited to certain things. Like your job or something. But i am still saying that education is very important.

12 05 2011
Lauren W.

Bryce, the majority of people without an education don’t get that far in life. But, there are a few who do change the world, but most don’t.

12 05 2011
Antonio M

But if you want to do bigger and better things to this world you need a lot of education

12 05 2011
Ammar I.

I agree with you without education you won’t do much in life.

12 05 2011
ALEX R.

You probably could survive life without education but you could not create or make anything or get profit. because people in Pakistan survived hundreds of years without schools or (a lot) education.

11 05 2011
jenna l.

in the book three cups of tea i think that the message is to be thankful for what you have been given. what i learned from this book is that everyone is similar in a way that is hard to see and understand. this means that everyone can look and act the same, it just is a difference in beliefs, and customs. if you could dress everyone up and have them all in the same outfit people wouldnt know the difference.

11 05 2011
Jes B.

That is exactly what I think. :p

11 05 2011
Lauren W.

Does everyone always REALLY act the came, compare Abraham Lincoln to Hitler, do they act the same?

12 05 2011
Carli C.

You are right. No one can really act the same but some have slightly similar feelings and ideas.

12 05 2011
Autumn E.

No, but deep down they’re both human beings that truly need the same things. Everyone needs food, shelter, and water.

12 05 2011
jenna l.

i get what you are saying Lauren but the extremities don’t really count. they read their version of the bible as we may read books. their mind twists around the words that are there to make them believe that they are doing the right thing. but if we were to give them a push in the right direction then what do you think would happen. no harm would come to you unless you are being forceful about it.

31 05 2011
Skyler W.

You are absolutly correct Lauren! People don’t really act the same but leave an impact on peoples’ lives. So I would usually say that they might all leave a big impact in the world and not really act the same. Don’t you agree?

11 05 2011
Claire

I agree with you!

11 05 2011
Maisie M.

That’s a really good perspective on things Jenna! The part on how everyone is similar made me think of the speech Syed Abbas recited. I feel the same way about how everyone is similar and it doesn’t matter what you look like or what your religion/race is. Everyone is the same to me, I mean we’re all humans aren’t we ? So why would one group of people be bad or different, and why would one be good or better ? The world gets very confusing sometimes. But overall great response!

12 05 2011
jenna l.

i totally agree with you the world does get confusing sometimes!

12 05 2011
Autumn E.

That’s what I think! We are very similar to them. The only difference is what we wear, or eat, or the technology we have.

12 05 2011
Martina

I agree. But i also think that the message is education is hope, and that’s what Greg Mortenson wants it to be. He gained his hope by giving a good education to the kids. And kept building more schools. 🙂 your right i also think we should be more grateful in life and less greety for a change.

11 05 2011
Martina

It is pretty self-explanatory to me. Education is hope. It is a part of life you cannot miss out on. This is why Greg Mortenson took so much time and effort in constructing schools for children. It is such a major part in your life. Like what you want to be when you grow up or how you want to make a difference in life. Education is power. Its so important to go to school and learn as much as you can, so when you finish you can be anything you want to be. And there are no regrets in your life. Education is knowledge that cannot be replaced. It is like a token in your life. If you don’t get to go to school or drop out, you’ll probably struggle or your life will be limited to what you can do. That’s why Greg built all these schools. Without education life is pratically pointless, but not entirely. Education is hope and no one can take that away from you. 🙂

11 05 2011

your rught he did take lots of time and effort

12 05 2011
Alejandro. S

I agree that education is what your saying and that it affects your whole life.

11 05 2011
Jes B.

I believe that the theme or lesson to be learned from this book is that we shouldn’t complain about what we have. People in America complain about our lives, money problems, and about other things when we shouldn’t be. When we are complaining about those things people in Pakistan have almost nothing. So next time you complain to your mom or dad think about the children in Pakistan who do soul wrenching work and don’t give the tiniest whimper. And it isn’t just children too it’s women, children, and men. Just think about it you could have it so much worse than you have it now.

11 05 2011
Autumn E.

Yeah that’s true. Most of us take everything for granted and complain when something goes wrong or we don’t get what we want.

12 05 2011
Jes B.

Exactly! and the poor people in Pakistan are metaphorically crawling on broken shards of glass each day to survive and don’t even make a single wince while we sit in cushy chairs and complain about ourselves. Unless there is something really bad in our lives we shouldn’t be complaining. And the least we can do is build schools so the people in Pakistan can get better jobs.

11 05 2011
Bryce Kurtzzzzzzzz

Yeah, a lot of kids in america complain about going to school. they are lucky because kids in other countries are using sticks to write on dirt, not even learning anything

12 05 2011
Carli

Sometimes school is boring but then I think of those kids and I feel lucky.

12 05 2011
Nikolas S

Is it really our fault that we complain about not getting things? Pretty much we grew up in a rich country and we have gotten almost everything we ever wanted. None of us have really ever experienced not having anything.

12 05 2011
Jes B.

Yeah, School might be boring at times but in the long run education is key to getting a good job and being successful.

12 05 2011
Antonio M

Your right later in life school will pay off. When were older and we have a job we will understand why we had to go to school

12 05 2011
Lauren W.

Yeah Carli I agree, after I read this book I was more thankful than mad I had to go to school everyday.

12 05 2011
Alejandro. S

Bryce i am pretty sure that the people in Pakistan get some education.

12 05 2011
Bryce Kurtzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Now, i know not all people in Afghanistan or Pakistan have no education. I know that some people are able to. but not a lot of people can.

12 05 2011
jenna l.

yes Jesse this is so true people shouldn’t complain about what they have. instead they should count their blessings. 🙂

12 05 2011
Carli C.

you have no idea how many times I have heard people complain about these school chairs and how they are uncomfortable. then there are kids in schools in other countries without even chairs to sit on. people should just stop complaining. think about other people not about yourself. long story short, I agree with you

11 05 2011
Sean C

To me, Education is hope means that if you build people schools and give kids educaton, They’ll have hope and they can start to believe that they can acomplish things more that they have hte education to do things and instead of sitting outside with almost nothing and a teacher that comes twice a week. All it means is that they have hope for things if they have education instead of them maybe thinking that theyre just wasting their life.

11 05 2011
Bryce Kurtzzzzzzzz

your right, just like 3 hours a week of education can be very helpful to children

12 05 2011
Collin D.

Your right 3 hours a week can be educational, we are still able to learn something on three hour days.

12 05 2011
Claire

especially if they don’t go to school on a regular basis.

12 05 2011
jenna l.

three hours a week of going to school would be awesome. we would have more days of school but more time with our family.

12 05 2011
Matt

If they think they are wasting their lives then they won’t become a terrorist and maybe help change the world.

11 05 2011
Mackenzie C.

The theme “Education is Hope” means that to have hope in your dreams you need an education to accomplish these. If you want to be a doctor you need an education for that. This stuff always needs to get an education. Kids can also get hope an can come up with more dreams just because of an education.

11 05 2011
Lauren W.

Weren’t you also supposed to write a lesson you’ve leaned from 3 Cups of Tea????

12 05 2011
Jes B.

Yeah Mackenzie what do you think it was about?

11 05 2011
Autumn E.

Yeah agree. You need hope in order to accomplish your goals in life.

12 05 2011
Martina

*Autumn- you need hope and education to accomplish your goals in life. I agree. What if Greg never got his hope? Then what would have happened to the people of Korphe?

11 05 2011
NateJig

I understand what you’re saying, but some people can become an astronaut without an education. I think that it is more to get an education, not only to accomplish your goal, but to help other people by using that goal. An education will make doctors to help Korphe. That gave Korphe hope. What other things do you need an education for to help people?

12 05 2011
Mackenzie C

I understand what your saying but you do need an education toe be an astronaut because you have classes that teach you to stay calm in the space shuttle, how to steer the space shuttle, and what to do in case of an emergency. So, you do need an education to be an astronaut, it’s just not a normal education.

12 05 2011
Jes B.

I’m with Mackenzie on this one. I’m pretty sure you need an education to be an astronaut…

12 05 2011
Mackenzie C

*to woops sorry! 🙂

12 05 2011
Nikolas S

I agree you can’t just become an astronaut with no education. Don’t you need a collage degree?

12 05 2011
jenna l.

Nate you need proper education to become an astronaut otherwise you will walk out of the space shuttle either without your space helmet or be so freaked out by low gravity that you don’t get any work done.

12 05 2011
NateJiG

Not what i mean. You don’t need any diploma to be an astronaut, unlike needing one to be a teacher or a doctor. I know that you need training but that isn’t what I’m talking about. Being an astronaut is more of a dream but how does it help others. Discovering new things, that doesn’t heal the illness of sick children. What i mean is that they need an education to specifically do an occupation that helps other people, like a doctor or a teacher. An astronaut doesn’t help people and doesn’t need an education or diploma.

12 05 2011
Eva R.

Well, I disagree with what you first said. About people becoming astronauts without an education. To become an astronaut you need to be educated. You need to be educated with the galaxy and aware what can happen or what is going on. You also need to get an education if you want to be an astronaut because you need to learn about the rockets, about space and many other things. I agree with you on everything else you said but about being an astronaut without an education. That is where I don’t agree.

11 05 2011
NateJig

I feel that when Greg says that the theme is “Education is Hope” He means that since there was no school in Korphe, everyone felt sad to be uneducated. There were no doctors or nurses or teachers. When Greg gave a school to Korphe, it gave them hope. Hope that they were going to survive illness, injuries, and many other things. When Greg gave them this school, he changed the world. There will be more doctors, lawyers, teachers, and more thanks to this school. I think the theme of this book is really that anyone ca make a difference. Just one person can do anything. My goal in life is to become a director. I feel i can make movies and show how funny they can be, and be able to make the world laugh. I already do that today. When i try to make someone laugh i try my hardest (even if it involves humiliating myself). The theme of the book, I think, is that if one person works hard enough, he/she can make a difference to a large group of people, maybe even the world.

11 05 2011
Brianna C.

I think that Greg was right when he said ” education is hope ” is the theme of the book, Three Cups Of Tea. There’s many different reasons why that is true. This is what i think, ” education is hope ” means. After Greg and everyone made the school, the kids were able to start learning. So they became starter and more educated. If they are educated and smart, they will believe in themselves more. That way they can do bigger and better things. They can also do things that they couldn’t do before. And the schools are giving them hope. But all of this would also help them in the future. The education can help them get a job, and become what they want to as they get older. Basically, Greg gave them schools and the schools educated them. The education gave them hope, and now they can do better things!

12 05 2011
Matt

That’s exactly what I thought. If kids have an education, they won’t be terrorists.

12 05 2011
Claire

they could still be….

12 05 2011
Nikolas S

Aren’t most terrorist the extremists?

12 05 2011
jenna l.

Matt this is NOT true. kids can have education and still become a terrorist all that terrorism is about is reading the their form of the bible having the words of it have a HUGE impact on them and then taking the matter into their own hands! 😉

12 05 2011
Lauren W.

Jenna and Claire, I agree with Matt. Don’t you think if people were in school and learned about other places and what great things we have done for others, they wouldn’t want to be terrorists.

12 05 2011
Eva R.

Actually it doesn’t matter if you get an education or not because the person who is going to school, they choose if whether or not they want to be a terrorist. School is just to help them learn. They make the decisions in their life not going to school or not.

12 05 2011
Claire

Great Idea! It’s true, if your educated then you can forsee your dreams of growing up and becoming what you wanna be.

12 05 2011
brianna c.

Matt, even if they didn’t have an education, it doesn’t mean that they would become terrorists.

12 05 2011

Good statement Brianna school can help you in the future.

12 05 2011
Martina

That’s what i had in mind too. Education is power and its everything you need to a bigger, better, and brighter future. 🙂 GREAT idea brianna

12 05 2011

Yeah, their education can do a lot for them.

12 05 2011
Antonio M

Yeah I agree, but you never said anything about a lesson you learned from Three cups of Tea

11 05 2011
Ammar I.

Education is hope means that without education you won’t have any hope for a normal life. Education is a way of how to get a regular life. It’s just like how if you don’t go to college you don’t get a good kind of job. This is what it means. It has to do with the book because korphe didn’t have a school and they were really poor and didn’t have a regular life. Many people say that they hate school like me. But where would we be without it? Probably poor, no job, you don’t have an education. So education is the reason why you can have a normal life.

11 05 2011
D.J.C.

Ammar, I agree completely with your comment. If we have no education we have no hope. Nice job!

12 05 2011
Grant O.

I agree ammar we take school for granted and act like it is a punishment while middle eastern kids would kill for schools and supplies like ours. I bet most of them haven’t even seen a laptop.

12 05 2011
Nikolas S

I think an education gives you a better life not a normal life. Even if you were poor you would have a normal life.

12 05 2011

i believe that we still have hope if we don’t have an education because education isn’t everything. i mean look at how the myans got around with no real form of school.

Jenna,
I don’t think the Mayans would agree with you. Mostly because they’re all dead, slaughtered by a more advanced civilization.

This theme is a very good match for this book. Education does give hope to children, and when he said that the war would be solved with books not bombs, he was right. By building schools he is educating students. This will keep them from getting the wrong ideas into their heads and becoming terrorists or criminals. With education the people of their country will have more people that are doctors. I think that is why education gives hope. Doctors can help the sick get better, though doctors require an education. So education gives hope to life.

11 05 2011
Adriana B.

I agree with what you are saying That education brings hope stop kids from becoming criminals.

11 05 2011
Bryce Kurtzzzzzzzz

not only will it help them from becoming bad people later in life but also help in like jobs

12 05 2011

I totally agree Collin. A lot similar to what i was saying.

I think the important lesson is that if you have an education you have hope, like greg mortenson said. If you have an education, you can do anything, you can get a good job, go to college, it’s whatever you want to do. Another important lesson i learned was that one person can make a huge difference, and they can inspire thousands of people.

12 05 2011
brianna c.

I agree, if they have hope and education they can get a job. Or they could go to a college, and do whatever they wanted to.

12 05 2011
Claire

yes they can and they will be able to do things easier, knowing more about them from their education.

12 05 2011
brianna c.

Yeah, the education will help them a lot in their future.

12 05 2011
Martina

I agree. Education is hope. you need hope to encourage yourself in life. Like raise money for a school, like Greg. Its very important you keep hope and education close into your heart! 🙂

11 05 2011
Alejandro.S

To me this text is important. I thought about it for along time and what came up in my mind was that in the book it said that Greg thought that education could stop kids from becoming terrorist.
I would think that this was what the book was about but there is also another meaning. The more education a child gets the more successful he will be in life. He will have hope. They will have more jobs to pick from. They will have a better chance at helping there community and leading it on day. They can become doctors and treat people who are sick and need care.
The people in Pakistan could use this. There were stuck in poverty and did not no what to do, but when Greg came things started to improve. The children had schools now and when they became older they help Greg and other people in Pakistan.

11 05 2011
Grant Olsen

I think the message in the book in “education is hope” is that education changes the world. It saves people from poverty by enableing them to get a good job. Greg Mortenson said that books will stop terror by giving people opprotunities other than terror. Education also makes people feel better about themselves. One thing I learned from the book is that one person can change the world. Greg Mortenson started by climbing a mountain and ended up building hundreds of schools in the poor villages of pakistan and aphganistan. Pennies for peace is another example. One penny can buy a pencil for a child in pakistan and if you gather up a bunch of pennies you can buy make a real difference. Three cups of Tea was a very inspireing book.

11 05 2011
Jose Q

That is very good. Greg can change the world. He probably did change almost all of Pakistan. He changed there thinking of Americans being selfish and bad. They probably thought hat because no one ever really helped them. Greg made them see that if no one is going to make a difference then he will. Now that the people there see that Americans can make a difference they will like us more and maybe they will do something for us.

12 05 2011
Claire

yeah, maybe they will do something good for us.

12 05 2011
Martina

Jose- I never would have thought of it that way. i guess Greg did almost change all of Pakistan. Good way to put it. I agree. 🙂

12 05 2011
Joseph A

I totally agree with what you said. Greg changed the lives of the little kids in Pakistan by building a school. Now they will be successful in life with a good education.

Carli C.

An important thing that I learned is to respect others. Not the simple Kindergarten respect. This is worldwide respect. To have tolerance. It makes me think that all people really are the same. With hopes and dreams. Tolerance is the most important thing I learned. Mr. Mortenson taught a lot of people about having tolerance. Without him a lot of people would still think of Middle Easterns as bad guys. This is sad. It takes a guy and a ton of money to make people realize that Middle Easterns aren’t horrible. This should come naturally. That is another thing I learned. To not make assumptions. Making assumptions can hurt people. It hurt the people in Pakistan for others to think of them as bad. These are the three main lessons I learned. The book helped me to respect, have toleranace, and to not make assumptions.

12 05 2011
Jes B.

That’s great Carli! If we did all the things you said the world would probably be a much better place. Don’t you think?

12 05 2011
Carli C.

That would make the world perfect. What would make it better is that if there were unicorns and it rained glitter.

11 05 2011
Bryce Kurtz

I think this theme means that if children are able to have a good education, they will have hope as adults. The people of Korphe believed in Greg about building a school. Soon enough, he did. He also built a bridge for Korphe.
I was able to learn a lot from Three Cups of Tea. But the most important lesson was to not judge other people of an area because of their religion or what people there have done in pasts.
Before I didn’t know that less than one percent of the Middle East were extremists. I feel better about the Islam religion now. A lot of them are good people.
I think anyone that thinks different about Middle East people should read this book. It will definitely change their thoughts about them. You sometimes feel guilty about thinking this way.
So in conclusion, the theme of Three Cups of Tea matches this book very well. Also, this book can teach a lot to other people. This book will always stay in my mind.

12 05 2011
Alejandro. S

Bryce i agree in what you said but isn’t there a little more to why the books theme ties in with the book.

12 05 2011
Antonio M

I totally agree with you.

12 05 2011
Matt

Yes I agree. All Muslims aren’t bad. Not even 1% of Muslims are extremists.

12 05 2011
jenna l.

Matt this is less than 1% is out f 1.3 billion Muslims.

12 05 2011
Hailey A.

I agree with you this book has also changed my opinion about the Muslim religion. It will also stick with me too. You said that you learned that you shouldn’t judge people, how is this the lesson you learned from the book Three Cups of Tea.

11 05 2011
ALEX R.

I think Greg means that when the Pakistani people get an education, they gain hope. They believe they can do more,Which in a way is true, and believe they are more “dignified” I guess is the best word to describe it. With an education they believe they are almost equals with Americans. My most important lesson that i learned from Three Cups of TEA is that what one person can do for the world. Just one ,not even famous, person ends up ,after trying for years , with a million dollar foundation called the CAI or the Central Asia Institution. Now he doesn’t have to worry that much about having enough money for building schools he still has to worry about terrorists organizations but that’s all.

11 05 2011
Jade.R.

I agree and that’s a good way to put the saying.

12 05 2011
Nikolas S

I agree but didn’t Greg have help from the rest of the people in his organization?

17 05 2011
Tori H

Thats a great way to think about it.

11 05 2011
Matt

I think this saying means that people will be more peaceful when they are educated. That’s why we need Muslim schools. Then the Muslims won’t turn to gangs and become under the influence of Osama Bin Laden. When properly educated, people can live happy and healthy lives. If not, then they might turn to the life of crime. That’s why we need education.

11 05 2011
Jake R.

I’m with you on that one. I never thought of it that way but now thinking of it it is true now he is trying to get more Muslim people to like Americans.

11 05 2011
Jose Q

Jake you did a good job on saying what you ment. I was thinking the exact thing. They want the muslims hope to be good and not to be like some of the people in pakistan

12 05 2011

instead of wanting to join al-kedia

12 05 2011

I agree. However I also think it means by being educated you will have hope to accomplish big things.

12 05 2011

I agree, but that’s not the only thing that the education is doing for them.

12 05 2011

Gotcha Matt I mean that is true but you had to put it in a silly way but it is funny and that is true Osama Bin Laden is not to be influenced after.

12 05 2011

12 05 2011

i think that’s exactly what the theme means, great thinking. the world would be chaotic if we didn’t have Muslim schools. We also need education to succeed in life. 🙂

12 05 2011
Nikolas S

Well we don’t really have to worry about people joining Osama Bin Laden because he is dead.

11 05 2011
Antonio M.

Greg Mortenson’s quote “Education is hope” can mean many different things. To me it means that learning things can lead to big things. Once you grow older with a bunch of knowledge you can invent things and get a job. The things that you invent could make a big difference in the world. Schools have to be built in order for kids to be educated. That is why Greg was building schools in Pakistan. Education is a big part of your life because without it you wouldn’t be able to do big things. However if you have education it can not be replaced and skys the limit. With education comes hope. Hope can help you believe in yourself. It will also make you try harder to accomplish better things. Not done yet

12 05 2011
Antonio M

(Continued) One thing I learned from Three Cups of Tea is one person can make a huge difference and give other people hope. Greg was giving the children of Korphe hope by building them schools. Pennies for Peace is another example. By donating one penny you could buy a penny for a poor child in Pakistan. Overall Three Cups of Tea was very inspiring to me.

12 05 2011

That is exactly what I thought, education can make big things like your dreams come true.

12 05 2011

I agree, learning deffinatly can lead to big changes.

11 05 2011
Angela Z.

“Education is hope”. This is the theme of Greg Mortenson’s book. To me, it means that education is very valuable and important. Education brings hope to the future, making the world a better place. What I learned from Three Cups of Tea, is that you can accomplish anything no matter what. All you need is confidence, and a whole lot of hope to get you though things. That is exactly what Greg Mortenson had, and he accomplished all of those things.
( not finished)

12 05 2011
Angela Z.

( continued )
If he did not have that he would not have accomplished anything. Yes, it was very difficult, but he never gave up. Not only do you need confidence and hope, but you also need to believe in yourself and you can do anything you want to do. Education unlocks a whole new door to life. It is also the key to hope and to your future. It gets you places and life. It helps you to be successful later on. Education is hope means much more than you have probably ever thought of it. That just mostly sums up Three Cups of Tea, and what Greg Mortenson has done. He is making a huge difference in this world, one school at a time.

12 05 2011

I agree with you. I think that is a good way to put it. That you need hope to accomplish anything

i totally understand what Greg is trying to say, education is hope. i think that to, for example if you want to do something that will change the world do it but you need a lot of education, also if you want to cure cancer you have to have some knowledge for cancer.but im sure curing cancer is a really big thing to accomplish.

11 05 2011

i agree because you have to have education in order to have hope. The hope in curing cancer but you need the education.

12 05 2011

Nothing about cancer. Hope meaning that in order to believe in something good, you need to learn. You can’t believe in something unless you know about it. That is what it means. Not like curing but establishing.

:)Education = Hope(: I think an education does equal hope. I do because in the book when he builds a school that is helping someone and making a better future even a tiny bit he is those kids will learn a little more that they did and that may just give them a chance to do something amazing. The kids give hope to when he builds schools they will be happy and give other people hope by making them go to school. He is helping a lot of people and spreading hope. I do believe education brings hope.

to me education is hope think about all of the celebrities who have a good career because of education. if we help those people who don’t have an education then they would have no meaning in life.with education we can give them a meaning so someday they can become successful.

11 05 2011
Jose Q

i kind of disagree because you don’t always have to be a celebrity to change the world. In the book the answer to one of his questions talked about how you don’t have to be famous to change the world. Greg wasn’t famous and he still changed the world. The rest was a really short and good explanation

11 05 2011
mcliterature

Although, think about it this way. When Greg wasn’t famous, it was very difficult for him. He had to beg for money, live in his car, and fight for every dollar. When he started to become more well known things became very simple for him – the rich guy donated money, people started writing articles about him, more people donated money and helped. Doesn’t being famous help?

12 05 2011
Grant O.

I agree with Mr. Curtis and Jose. Greg, Even though he wasn’t famous still managed to build the korphe school But then after he built that he started getting donations and articles like Mr. Curtis said.

12 05 2011
NateJiG

I agree with Mr. Curtis on this one. Being famous does help, but i don’t think you necessarily need an education to be famous. Greg became famous by helping the world and building a school. Others just get discovered off the internet, at some sort of gig, or even on American Idol or some other tv show. When people saw them, they didn’t look at their education. They look at the talent you have or something great that you did. Just think of all the child stars out there. Most of them haven’t even finished school, yet. If they looked at your education, do you think that people like Justin Bieber or the Olsen Twins would become rich and famous at a young age?

12 05 2011
Carli C.

Being famous is actually very important. If Jane Goodall hadn’t become famous, do you think she would have been able to start that organization. And if you don’t know who Jane Goodall is, look it up.

12 05 2011
Collin D.

If people knew that he was doing this he would have become famous no matter what.

12 05 2011
Grant O.

I agree with Mr. curtis and Jose. Greg still managed to change the lives of all the kids in Korphe while he wasn’t famous. That shows that you don’t NEED to be famous to change the world but it really helps. After greg built the korphe school he got more famous which helped him significantly.

12 05 2011
Angela Z.

I agree, it does help to be a celebrity, but not much. You don’t HAVE to be famous to be successful in accomplishing something. All it takes is a lot of hope and determination.

12 05 2011
bwhitt13

I think that it helps to be famous, but sometimes it doesn’t, because you don’t have to be famous in order to make a difference in the world. Sure it helps but all you need is hope to make a difference.

11 05 2011
Collin V.

The quote,”education=hope” can mean many things to different people. It means one thing to me, you need hope to do what you want, education can get you there the fastest, easiest, and the smartest way possible. Unless it’s a bad decision. Education is what helps us make the best decision.

11 05 2011
Jade.R.

This theme means a lot to me. It means that when you get educated, you learn more. If you learn more then you can do more things and explore. This would make hope. When you get educated, you shouldn’t just think about school work and say in your mind ‘oh man. That means I have to go to school’ Education is not just school. It is something you can do. Not something you have to do. Education = Hope is not just a theme. Education = Hope is real life. If you get a good education, it’s not because you WENT to school, it’s because you worked hard and learned something from school. This is what Education = Hope means to me!!!!!!!

12 05 2011
Lauren W.

Jade, can you explain how learning more and exploring makes hope?

11 05 2011
Adriana B.

I think the lesson was to be grateful for what you have because some people don’t have those things. Also instead of getting more things for you, you can use it to donate money for people who do need it. Also the quote Education= Hope. I think what he is trying to say that you need education to be able to get jobs and to have money because without education there really is no hope. When you have education you go to more schools and you get any job that you want. Education does give you the future you want and it helps make the world a better place. You need education for many things like to own your own house, to get a job, to know how to stay healthy.

11 05 2011
Sam I

That’s a great way to think about it because not everyone is as lucky as you. You may have a bus and they may have to walk so donate money so they can maybe be able to ride a bus next year.

11 05 2011

I do agree with instead of getting something at the store, donate the money to people who really need it. Nice job!

11 05 2011
D.J.C.

It means one thing. Education helps your future to be better. Without education their is no hope in your future. Education gives people jobs. It means you can become whatever you want to be. That is why education means hope.

11 05 2011
christopher m.

I agree with you because without education you wont find a decent job or wont get to get into a awesome or good college.

11 05 2011
ivan with 2 pairs of eyebrows

I think education is hope. Even though people might thing school is boring and waste of our lives. School helps us and some people don’t even have schools. With schools we learn about math to build and for people who work at banks. We use science for medical and creating. We also use social studies to learn about the history our ancestors. We use Language Arts for writing and reading. Language Arts helps us with almost everything. Some people don’t even know one thing about any of those subjects and those help us with our jobs future. If we don’t have any education there is never going to be any hope. What I learned from three cups of tea is to use 1/4 of your day to go to school or help people because once you start little you can end big.

11 05 2011
D.J.C.

I totally agree. Without education their is no hope.Nice job! (By the way, whats with the name?)

11 05 2011
Jessica S

You are right because a lot of people either hate school or think it is a waste. If you didn’t join school or have a education you will be out on the streets for the rest of your lives or live with parents. Good thinking !

12 05 2011
Abbie B.

I agree with what you are saying. People here don’t give a second thought about school they don’t realize how lucky we are to go to school to have enough to eat to have a caring family where in Pakistan they are always cold they never have enough to eat.

11 05 2011
Joseph A

Education is hope is the theme of Greg Mortenson’s book. To me, this means that education can make your life better and make you happier. The kids in Pakistan had no hope and future until Greg gave them a school and education. He made their lives a lot better and more meaningful. Without Greg’s help, they would get nowhere in their lives. Education would get them a good job and possibly the honor of being the village leader. In the U.S, education would make their lives better so that they would go to college and graduate and get a good job.

12 05 2011
Mackenzie C

I completely agree with you! When Greg helped these kids he gave them hope in life. Like they can be happier and more educated with the school now.

11 05 2011
Jose Q

What i think he means by education =hope being the theme can mean many things t certain kinds of people. I think it means that by getting education you know more stuff. For example when you ask questions you usually think of more questions because of the answers but in order to have more questions you need answers. Think of the questions being hope and answers being education. when you set hope you need education and that education will make more hope. You also need education to have hope so you know hat you are doing. Its like driving a car. you need to know signs and how to drive before you could actually drive. This story taught me many things. it taught me that some places need more stuff than we do. People might be mad that the author is building schools in Pakistan than helping the schools we have. In Pakistan they don’t even have schools. most of the people don’t even have a home. That means none of them have hope. since they don’t have education it means they don’t have hope. from the schools we have at least we have enough education to have hope. In the united states we have alot more stuff than people do in Pakistan.

11 05 2011
Joseph A

That is a great way to think about it. We are spoiled compared to the poor people in Pakistan who still don’t have schools. Without the help from Greg, they would get nowhere in their lives.

11 05 2011
Jose Q

Yes Joseph you are right. Compared to Pakistan we are spoiled. Even if we don’t have the best schools we at least have them and to them having the worst school is still spoiled because they at least have education which means we have more hope.

11 05 2011
Jade.R.

Wow that’s a good way to put it. I like that you make the questions hope and the answers education.

11 05 2011
Eva R.

I agree with you because we do have a lot more stuff in the U.S. than in Pakistan. So I think that it is a good thing that the author thought of making another place other than the U.S. like Pakistan a better place so the people there can have a lot more hope and a lot more chances to do what they want to do.

11 05 2011
Abbie B.

I never even thought of it that way but when you put it that way it makes perfect sense. When you have hope as your question the answer will always be education. If you ever want to succeed in life you will have to have some sort of education. Without an education everything is impossible.

11 05 2011
Jose Q

Yes Abbie you just explained almost what i ment. I see that you understand what i ment.

11 05 2011
christopher m.

I think that education does mean hope. I think this because when you start to grow up your going to need to know some of this stuff. I also think this because by the time you 18-19- or even 20 you’ll be looking for a job. Another reason you should is because when you want to go to college you will have to know somethings to get in or to have some background knowledge. I also disagree because when you don’t understand something there going to have trouble in there later lives with it. Also another thing is when the kids in the school don’t have good grades and they go onto the next grade they wont understand it much and will have trouble with it next year, and if the teacher calls on them there going to stud-er because they really wont get it.

11 05 2011
Jessica S

I agree with you because if you were 18 or older you wouldn’t know what job to do. If you aren’t educated at cant find a job go to McDonald’s and cook some food. If your not a good cook sit at home and have a horrible life and eventually loose your home. That is why education=hope.

12 05 2011
ALEX R.

that is very true you do need to understand things in schools before you move on to the next grade. If you don’t understand and you move on it will be even more difficult to learn about the stuff in the next grade.

11 05 2011
Jessica S

I think Greg is right. If you have a good education and you pass school you have good hope when you are older. You will succeed if you are smart so you can get a job. Three Cups of Tea inspired me to help people who need it. You can donate clothes for people who don’t have any or they are just to poor,if I was older and a lot of spare time I would help build a school with some adult supervision just in case. I read a book that is just like this one. It was about a boy who was homeless and very poor. A parent on the street took him to a shelter where he could be educated and fed. That guy is very kind to know what the boy needed. (Hope)

11 05 2011
Abbie B.

your right we should think more about other people. We should donate clothes start food drives and join in on the pennies for hope program.

12 05 2011
Abbie B.

When i think of all those poor kids in Pakistan and Afghanistan i feel very selfish and that everyone here is so selfish that we can’t give them a little to eat, education, or hope

11 05 2011
Eva R.

I think that the message “Education is Hope” is pretty much what the sentence says. It says that education is hope and that is what it means to me. It means that if you have an education and I mean like a good one then you can have the life that your hoping for. The life that you have always wanted even when you were a kid. This is what the message means to me.
I think that the lesson in the book to me is that no matter what you do or how you do it as long as you put time and effort into it then it can happen no matter what. Whether it’s from climbing mountains or to being president of the United Sates one day. The evidence that I got from the book is that Greg Mortenson climbed so many mountains because he didn’t quit. Once things got hard for him he didn’t go back down the mountain when he was finished, he just went to another mountain and climbed that one. He just kept on going until there were no more huge mountains to climb. This is what I think that the important message in the book is to me. This is what I think I learned.

11 05 2011
Julissa V

I think the theme of the book is education is hope. To me education means to hope and hope brings future, and your future is sometimes making the world a better place. Like Greg his future making a world a better place. Tree cups of tea taught me about confidence a bit more. And that you can accomplish anything you put your mind too. Like Greg had accomplish so many things like the schools is one. Pennies for peaces a program to help kids get educated. This book also taught me about that everyone is the same in different ways. Everybody has dreams and hopes. And we need to help people without schools and homes.

11 05 2011
Abbie B.

The saying “Education equals hope” is the theme of the book. Greg Mortenson is saying that if you have education than you have hope. If you are educated you have hope for a good future. Education is the key for having a good job and a good life. Without an education you will be hopeless. You will be hopeless in getting a good job and a good future.

11 05 2011
Joseph A

That is how I thought about it too. Greg gave those kids hope to grow up and get a good job. Without him, they would be nothing in the future.

11 05 2011
Abbie B.

Without the hope that Greg Mortenson gave them they would have nothing in the future for them they would have to try to survive without the education we have. Without Hope there is no education, but the kids still had hope and Greg answered that hope with a school for them

To me this book means a little bit more than Education=Hope. To me it means yes, Education=Hope but it also makes me think how good it is to help people who are hopeless and needy of things that they really should have but don’t. Like how after Greg built one school in Korphe, and other tribes heard about it and were willing to give up everything just so they could have a school, with walls. And Greg never turned down a request. So this book also makes me think of dedication to things. And like the part when Syed Abbas televised his speech about 9/11. This also showed me dedication for your work and to fight for what you believe in. Without education, there may be no hope, but then without hope, there is no education. The themes of this book are very important once you really sit down and think about it. We never really think of how lucky we are to have all this special technology, good clubs in schools, sports teams, great teachers, and of course these clean schools. And somewhere in Central Asia there could be kids trying to get an education but might not be able to. And for one last theme this story makes me think of everything happens for a reason. To me Greg ending up in Korphe was no coincidence, I think he was meant to go there. And just for that small event happening when he got lost in K2 changed his whole life.

That’s a good way to put it. I like how you compared Centeral Asia to America. How we have clean schools and they have sticks and dirt.

Maisie M.

Thanks Jade! Yeah I feel like we have a little more than we actually deserve sometimes here in America. If you know what I mean by that. I mean because we have all these great technologies and then in Pakistan they barely have anything! It makes me want to help out the kids in Pakistan!

I do agree about how like we get more technology, good club, sport teams, great teachers, clean school and more, also how everything happens for a reason. Nice job!

11 05 2011
Maisie M.

Thanks Julissa! Yeah it kinda makes me feel bad how we have so much here and the kids in Pakistan have so little. I wish we could help in some way. Like maybe have our school try and run a fundraiser for Pennies For Peace or something. Maybe that would give them a little more hope to achieve an education.

(continued)
kind of like how we had the scarf and gloves donation but with pennies to go to the schools in Pakistan or something. But i doubt that would really work out. But like the theme of the book Education=Hope so if we are all dedicated enough we might be able to raise that hope for all those underprivileged children get the education the children strive for.

Yeah.. learning about the children in Pakistan makes me feel, well, spoiled. We children of America have every little thing we could ask for. We have good schools. A home with heat and air conditioning. Good water for us to drink. The kids in Pakistan have to learn in the dirt though.

I agree with what you are saying and there are many more ways to think about. I think we should help people in Central Asia because they don’t have as much as we have.

11 05 2011

i think that he should help the other people in Pakistan and the people who said he was i disagree. i think that for the people who have no hope or who are hopeless i think that people can change that. also learned not to think bad of everyone in the Middle east. not even one percent is and bad person. there is hope for everyone i think.

12 05 2011

like 1/2% is bad. people who have no hope and are hopeless are basically the same. but good thoughts anyway

12 05 2011

Don’t think, know! Not all Muslims are bad guys like Ammar said that one day. Regardless of that, everyone deserves an education. When we don’t want to go to school or have to take a big test and think that school sucks, think about all the people in the world that don’t have a school. They’re dying to have education to believe in their dreams. We are spoiled. We have to cherish everything that we have, because there are millions of people in the world that don’t have those things, like toys, video games, schools, clothes, and sometimes even parents. When you “absolutely need” something, and whine when you don’t get it, think of the people in Pakistan or anywhere in the world who sometimes don’t even have a home or a nice comfy bed.

Education is hope, that is the theme Three Cups of Tea. That means that if you get an education even just a little eduction you will have hope to do what you want to do. This can help make the world a better place. The people in Pakistan are beginning to gain more hope because of what Greg Mortenson did to help them.(to be continued)

i think that the government should make a program where they make pennies just for the poor schools because martin luther king didnt go to a very good school but look at him now hes dead but he changed the world if he didnt said what he said i bet slavery would be goin on today.so thats just proof what people can do.

12 05 2011
Ammar I.

Martin Luther King jr. didn’t end slavery. Abraham Lincoln did.

12 05 2011
Carli C.

learn your facts jose’s- friend- dominic- fasanella. Abraham Lincoln ended slavery. MLK Jr. just helped it along later on. As did Rosa Parks and those people.

12 05 2011
NateJiG

I agree with ammar, and you. Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t end slavery, he just simply changed the world much like Greg did. Whites and Blacks were treated differently, and you could say unfairly. He convinced everyone to change the way they are and he became famous. Don’t you think that being famous by changing the world is a lot better than being famous for singing well than ruining your life and go crazy with money and fame?

12 05 2011
Martina K.

Good idea. the government should make a program-pennies for peace. I wonder what the world would be like? A better place, or more conflicts form. you never know

In this story the reason i loved it so much it was the speech that Syed Abbas said to the people of Kuardu school he told “That today is a day that you children will remember forever and tell your grandchildren today from the darkness of illiteracy the light of education shines bright we share in the sorrow as people weep and suffer in America today as we inaugurate this school those who have committed this evil act against the innocent the women and children to create thousands of widows and orphans do not do so in the name of Islam by grace of Allah the almighty may justice be served upon them for this tragedy i humbly ask Mr George and Dr Greg sahib for their forgiveness all of you my brethren protect and embrace these two American brother in our mission successful i request American to look into our hearts and see that the great majority of us are not terrorists but good and simple people our land is stricken with poverty because we are without eduction but today another candle of knowledge has been lit in the name Allah the Almighty may it light our way out of darkness we find ourselves in.” This speech is what changed me to think of the people in Afghanistan and the people in Pakistan to not think of the bad crazy people there and think of the children that need our help.

I like to reply to my answer because i left out something at the end i think
when i had read this speech its made me think different about the people
out in the world. If i think about the children there arent doing any-
thing bad to us so why do we have to make it hard for them.If its not them
and if there is still bad we should blame the people that did the bad things
and not to blame the people that had nothing to do with it any ways.
If we blame the people and they didnt do anything then they are
going to do something. Its like if some one says they dont like you and u
didint do anythingto them then u feel like what you did them so i think thats
what the people think of us. Also i like to say something eles because if you
really think about they are just kids like us who do different and talk different but they are still just kids normal and the same.

I think that education equals hope is something that could mean many things but to me i think that the children in poor areas have to have a little hope because if they don’t then they will never get anywhere in life and it will be a little bad because then they might then they might be better at something at life

12 05 2011

To me the lesson of the book is that Education is hope. I think that this means that you need education to have knowledge and you need the hope to carry on in whatever you plan on doing, weather its becoming and astronaut or becoming a teacher. I think that Greg, of everybody, would understand this the most. When Greg wasn’t famous, life was very difficult for him. He had to beg for money, live in his car, and work hard for every dollar that he had. But when he became more well known, life became easier all of a sudden because money was being handed to him by people who had hope in him succedeing with his new career in the CAI. All of this success was because he was able to get an education and had hope that he could make a difference.

One major thing that I learned from Three Cups of Tea that you can accomplish anything that you try to tackle big or small. Overall the book was very inspiring to me.

12 05 2011

I think Greg was able to have a better life because he had hope. And hope is everything you need life in succeeding. So make sure it sticks into your heart. Great idea Isabel. I agree. 🙂

i completely agree with that because without any hope you cant get anywhere with your life

Education=Hope This statement is so true if you if you had no education you would have no hope of getting a job without a job you are doomed. Many people think you have to be famous to change the world but that is not entirely true Greg mortesnson was barely getting y himself but he still helped build schools in places that desperately needed one

12 05 2011
Thaisha N

Education=Hope. I think that it means that when kids learn about something new, then they will have more hope on what they could do when they grow up. The more things they learn the more hope there will be for the kids. Then the kids could pass on what they learned and if they keep doing that then all the kids in the world will have hope.

12 05 2011
Someone Named Trevor

I think it means that if someone teaches something to a person it means that they have hope to do good in school and maybe be what they want to be when they grow up. And when someone learns a new thing they can teach it to other people, like a sibling and a relative. That’s what I think Education=Hope means.

12 05 2011
bwhitt13

I think that education is hope means that once you are educated to do something than that means anything is possible. Take Greg Mortenson for example, he was probably educated on how to build all of those schools, and since he was educated on how to build those schools then that give other children hope that one day they will be able to go to those schools and learn things and try to succeed in life. I think that since Greg built those schools there is more hope in the world, like since he did so can I.

12 05 2011
Dead Mohawk

I think it means that the more you are educated the more hope you will have for the rest of your life.So if you are educated you will have a better chance of doing good in your life.Like you could get a better job.Or you will just have more intelligence for your whole life.

The saying education is hope can mean many things . But to me i think it means, if u get educated . Even if it’s just a little , you will have hope . Hope to learn new things . With the hope they have , they can be inspired to do anything. Everyone can have hope in some way.For example people can have little hopes like I hope I get an A+ on my math test today . Or i hope we get pizza for dinner today . But everyone should get educated in some way .

12 05 2011
Jaret M

i think what he means is you need to know whats actually know whats going on that not everybody is a terrorist or somebody else bad like that there’s actually good people there who don’t believe were all that bad.so we have to hope for them.so what are they going to do they don’t know any better that’s what they teach them

12 05 2011
bree s.

i think that means if you care to learn but not to hope then you will learn to hope the good way and not the bad . if you really think about it then you will really learn the real way to hope . when you hope for your mom to clean your room that is the bad way to hope. but if you hope that wars will stop and that people in other countries stop hurting each other and start treating each other the same and not like nothing. education can teach you hope. Mr.Curtis is kind of teaching hope when he talks about what happened in Japan makes me HOPE they are okay, makes me HOPE that i can help. that is what i think it means.

The “Education is hope quote means to me the same thing as the quote “Mind is power”. Which means that if you have the right mind and thoughts you can be powerful. That is the basics to the quote “Education is Power”. Accept has a little different meaning. It means to me that with education you can do any thing you set your mind to! And with that you can help the world be a better place to live. I think that the most important lesson I learned from this book is that if something or somebody or even some little village in Pakistan needs help. And it dosent matter what they have done to you or you have done to them. You just have to put that aside and help.

12 05 2011
SarahL

I do thinks that the lesson is that he wants to show that you can help people with anything. And how Greg tried his best to help build a school for the villages that want a school for children that need education to grow up smart then dumb.

i think what it means is education is the hope to those kids futures that if we don’t start helping them there families hope is endanger. that is we don’t care for OUR children what is the hope going to be like in the future? who is going to run our country? and that all the hope can be found in education so thats why the kids need it so bad! take a second and think about that and think to your self we are lucking enough to have education that we will have a better future!!!

I do know this but a little differnce goes a long way and it also changes the world. So if you want to” Heal the World ” start in your town.

12 05 2011
Danielle D.

I thought it meant many things. But it can all be put into one thing. Mr. Curtis also said they have many differences. Like their skin color a bit. But it meant that you shouldn’t judge someone by where they live or their skin color. It’s not fair because you don’t know the people who live there. It’s their religion. The religious extremists is what some people judge Muslims by. But that really isn’t fair. Don’t judge people by their cover. But most people do ,so they need a good outlook on other people.

12 05 2011
emz

the quote that we are talking about is that we needs to be grateful to learn. i think that other people think that its “stupid” or “boring” because we luck to have it. if anyone say that they hate school then they should listen to this very carefully. not everyone gets to go to school and the ones that do are rich. this is saying that if you go to school you are luck. not that you have money, that you have a chance to learn. other don’t so enjoy it because you one day might not get it and know how it feels.

13 05 2011
Tori H

To me the meaning “Education and hope” is you have the power to help anyone by doing one small thing. Like how a ton of people in Korphe are getting education now because of the one small thing he did. Also I thought he was trying to prove to others that you dont have to do something big to help someone else.

I think the phrase education=hope says alot. I think it means that by building all of these schools in poor countrys with children that have never gone to school gives they hope that they can do something with there lives. It might also let people from forgen countrys know that we are not against they i think that what greg mortenson is doing means alot to many people.

13 05 2011
Ariana.M

Q=Explain in your own words what that message means to you. Be sure to tell us what the most important lesson you’ve learned from Three Cups of Tea is. Explain why.

A=I think it means that by him building schools he is giving people hope witch makes a lot of sence. The most important lesson that i have learned form the book 3 cups of tea is that just because certin people chose muslim as there religion does not mean that all of them are religious exteremists some people might be but we all have to rember that they are just women and men and children like us here just because they mabye dress different or talk different doesent mean we have to be afraid of them. i never knew that i always just watched the news and thought that that ment every one from foregen countrys was out to get us, witch i now know to be completly unture and that is a very important lesson that i learned from this book.

When I hear “education is hope”, many things come to mind. First of all, I think of my own education, and how that gives me hope for a better future. Think about it, if you never got the education that you have now, there would not be any hope for your future. So basically I’m saying that education is hope for the future, and if you didn’t have an education, you would have no hope for future. Next I think about the kids in Pakistan. For them, Greg is like a miracle that gives them some place to learn. Also, the children in Pakistan use to just sit there and already know that they will have no hope for their future because they have no education! Did you know that literacy itself rose from 45 to 54 percent between 2002 and 2006! This is because people like Greg Mortenson are building more schools for kids to get more education. The kids that have literacy to 54 percent do have more hope now, and is gaining hope for a better future. So I know that some of you guys are saying that you don’t need education to have hope, but if you really think about it, a good education will get you many places in life, and that right there is hope!
